Mary Ellen Alberti

I began practicing yoga in search of inner peace.  As a mother of five, it quickly became an essential philosophy and daily practice that guided me towards serenity and clarity in all aspects of life.  In the twelve years that I have been practicing yoga I have held an abundance of gratitude for the wisdom that I have received from each of my instructors, especially Donna Boyle and Lucy D'Aponte who have given me treasured guidance and spent individual teacher training time with me. I look forward to forever evolving as an instructor as well as in my personal yoga practice. I would also like to thank the students who come to my classes and share their beautiful Spirits and open hearts with me.

Another passion in my life’s journey is to bring healing to others through Reiki.  I am a certified Usui and Karuna Reiki Master/Teacher.  After being diagnosed with an illness in 2001 and being told that I needed surgery, I decided to first explore alternative forms of healing.  I worked with a homeopath and began to receive Reiki on a weekly basis.  I experienced such significant healing – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually – that I was moved to study this beautiful technique myself.  If you would like more information on Reiki healing please visit our Reiki page.

I received a Bachelor of Fine Art in college and I find that making art is one more way in which I can find that quiet place to be with my inner self.  My work expresses a self-awakening journey and the connections I feel with the Universe.

Edgar Mesquita

I began my path with Yoga in 2000 in Portugal through Swasthya Yoga (swasthya means self-sufficiency, a method developed by Maestro DeRose). This style brought me a much needed knowledge of my body, mind and breath as well as an awareness of my feelings. In 2001 I traveled to Brasil to attend an intensive Teacher Training, as I felt the desire to further my understanding of what Yoga is and how it works. I then moved to Costa Rica with my family. Sensing the need to pass on all of the knowledge and happiness that I experience in my practice, my wife, Laura and I opened a Yoga School. There I had the honor and pleasure to share yoga with many different students and teachers from all around the world bringing me a meaningful deepening of my own practice and study. My yoga style is no longer Swasthya but a mix of Swasthya, Svatantrya Yoga ( a method developed by Prof. Edson Moreira, a teacher & friend) and my own approach to Yoga. Svatantrya means Freedom. Through my daily experience at my school in Costa Rica I came to realize the importance of Freedom in our daily growth. This awareness gave me the lightness and flexibility in the practice of Yoga that now is present in my classes and I invite you to share this with me! As Yoga means Life, I am sure that we change everyday. If we bring openess and curiosity to yoga class we will learn to embrace this attitude in the way we live our lives. Opening to Freedom of change means opening fully to Life.

Laura Mesquita

I began practicing yoga in 2000 and teaching yoga in 2001.
I am certified in Swásthya (translates: self-sufficient) and Svátantrya (free will) Yoga.
I was born and raised in Africa (Congo) until the age of 11 when my family moved to Portugal. The experience of living in such varied cultures has given me a unique perspective of the world´s differences and similarities first hand. This perspective was deepened when after 2003 I began traveling and living in South, Central and North America. Learning and experiencing different cultures has opened my mind to new approaches towards Life and Yoga.

Cathe Neuberger

I was introduced to yoga in 2000. As I attended class, I came to realize how much I loved the mental and physical benefits of the practice. Through the years, as my practice naturally deepened, I found myself transformed into a stronger and more gracious version of myself. My yoga practice has led me to be a person I love, and continues to show me the path to better living.
I attended Soma Yoga teacher training with Bobbie Ellis-Bianculli in 2006 and have enjoyed teaching ever since. My physical practice is influenced by many of the paths of hatha yoga, with a special interest in alignment principles. I enjoy working with themes in order to more fully investigate a particular aspect of yoga philosophy.
My classes emphasize slowing down, tuning into the body's natural rhythm, and above all remembering that humor is an essential part of life. Sometimes the best thing that can happen during practice is to lose your balance and giggle! Bring an open mind and heart and an intention of self-acceptance.

Nancy Spencer

In addition to teaching science at Harwood Union Middle School, NancySpencer has taught yoga in the Mad River Valley for 16 years. Her emphasis is on the inner movement of the body using Yoga positions as a framework. Her focus is on cultivating the relationship between the attentive mind, the breath, the spine, the body, and the person as a whole. This inwardly focused approach allows us to "undo" tension, reclaim energy and facilitate healing. Nancy's teaching embraces the artistry and essence of yoga. She has been influenced by many teachers over her years of study. Her primary teachers are John Stirk, Carol Nelson, Judith Lasater and Diane Long.

Nancy teaches a wonderful Restorative Yoga Workshop at Awaken. The contemplative monk Thomas Merton refers to the state of being overly busy and over-committed as "an innate form of violence". Honoring rest and relaxation has been a part of most sacred traditions as a gateway to spiritual experience. Restorative yoga guides us in transitioning from the busyness of the doing mode to the peace (non-violence) of the being mode. Within us, in this place of stillness, our health resides.
